I am not convinced giving money solves anything, however. It doesn't right any wrongs, and will likely do no good.

Dear Fran;
Just hoping this new year holds you and yours in harmony. Things are looking good for some of the indian tribes what with Obama helping some 41 tribes receiving money for the mismanagement of their lands.

Being Irish (and Catholic) in England is a whole other situation. Interesting to hear the comments and the impressions the British have towards the Irish still. We have found that the Irish in any country carry a deep love and loyalty to their homeland no matter how long they (or their ancestors) have been gone.

Dear Friends Fran and Larry! A splendid tale from the land of the Eire indeed. It's quite remarkable to think that almost 3 million Irish men, women and children departed their homeland during the years between the mid-19th and 20th centuries from the port of this very village. Knowing that you were in Cobh, I (in the parlance) did 'a wee bit' of online research on the area. I was immediately smitten by the lovely colorful rowhouses, small independent shops, Italienate tower and grand cathedral by the sea. I suspect that away from the most photogenic locales, one will also find some of the detritus of everyday life. Still, there is something in the blood that makes such villages nestled amongst such verdant hills by such seas that draws one siren-like to these places we call home. May your ongoing travels be safe and as enjoyable. Standing by for your next report.

Hi Fran and Larry! Indeed, one must adjust to the conditions in which one is cast, and it appears that your apartment in Cobh provided an adventure in traditional home appliance engineering. I can say that I would be extremely loathe to make direct contact with any electric device (such as the wall-mounted flash heater controls) whilst in a watery environment. If you don't mind, I'd love to use your description of the shower as an example of an 'interesting' design for the students in my class on "Human Factors in Systems Design" to discuss. I present photos of various devices that humans use during their daily routines and ask to the class whether they believe the design of the product to be 'good', 'bad' or 'ugly'. I'll be curious to hear what they have to say about the shower. Looking very much forward to your next note from Ireland!
